A new school year brings fresh opportunities, but for families of students with disabilities, it also means preparing for much more than buying school supplies. A little planning before the first day can help your child transition more smoothly and set the stage for a successful year.
Start by reviewing your child's IEP or 504 Plan. Make sure the goals, accommodations, and services still reflect your child's current needs. If anything has changed over the summer, don't hesitate to request a meeting before school begins.
Reach out to your child's teachers and service providers early. Sharing your child's strengths, interests, communication style, and support needs helps build a positive partnership from the start. Establishing a communication plan can also make it easier to address concerns throughout the year.
Help your child prepare for the transition by talking about what to expect, practicing school routines, and using visual schedules or social stories if they are helpful. Familiar routines and clear expectations can reduce anxiety and build confidence.
Finally, remember that you are an important member of your child's educational team. Stay organized, keep records of communication, and ask questions whenever something doesn't seem right. Strong collaboration between families and schools is one of the best ways to support student success.
